Hi, I'm Christa.

STILLNESS

CARE

My journey began in 2007 at Manchester School of Art, where I studied Textile Design for Fashion. What began as a fascination with materials and colour soon evolved into a deeper exploration of colour-change technologies and their expressive and therapeutic potential. From the beginning, this inquiry was not only creative but deeply personal. Through my own experiences, I discovered the symbolic and transformative power of colour, in particular dynamic colour, using it as a way to reconnect with my inner state and find equilibrium.
Today, Material Evolution Lab is the artist-research practice through which I explore how materials, colour and sensory environments shape human awareness and wellbeing. Working at the intersection of art, design and science, I create immersive colour-change environments and material experiences that invite stillness, reflection and renewed connection between people and the living world.
Over more than two decades of experimentation with colour-responsive materials, sensory technologies and interactive installations, my work has investigated how colour influences perception, emotional balance and the subtle relationship between body, mind and surroundings.
I have collaborated with international artists, brands and organisations, using responsive materials to create environments and art that evolve through interaction with people and their surroundings.
Designing Stillness
At the core of my practice is Designing Stillness, an ongoing research inquiry developed during my postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London.
The research explores how carefully composed environments can support states of stillness and awareness within a world characterised by speed, distraction and ecological imbalance.
My work approaches materials not as passive substances but as active participants in experience.
Through colour-changing pigments, light-responsive surfaces and immersive environments, I explore how matter, atmosphere and human perception interact to shape emotional and physiological states. These investigations are informed by new materialist thinking, which understands humans as relational actors within wider networks of matter, technology and ecology.
